Summary

This report explores how fair trade can contribute to more equitable, resilient, and sustainable economies through its 10 guiding principles, which promote social equity, environmental responsibility, and economic resilience. It examines the role of fair trade in shaping urban food systems, strengthening connections between producers and consumers, and advancing broader sustainability goals, including the circular economy.

The report aligns with the objectives of the AfriFOODlinks project, which seeks to foster sustainable and resilient urban food systems across African and European cities by promoting local, circular, and inclusive food economies. Fair trade principles strongly connect with the project’s values, which emphasise innovation, collaboration, and stronger linkages within and between cities. The report concludes with practical guidance for businesses, incubators, and policymakers on integrating fair trade principles into local policies and governance structures.
