City overview

Bambilor is a rural commune created in 2014, located in the Rufisque department, 25 km from Dakar, the capital of Senegal, and 5 km from Lac Rose. Located in the Niayes region, Bambilor is a key supplier of agricultural products to the Dakar region. The commune covers an area of around 100 km² and has an estimated population of 53,000. The main economic activities include market gardening, livestock breeding, poultry farming and small-scale commerce.

Status of food and nutrition security

For several years now, the Commune of Bambilor has been facing challenges that pose major obstacles to food security for the population. In addition to galloping urbanization, which is transforming agricultural areas into residential zones, there are a number of other unfavorable factors: poor conservation of perishable agricultural produce, problems with farmland development, difficulties in accessing water, outdated practices in the production system, lack of awareness of the benefits of consuming local agricultural produce, and increasingly frequent flooding of homes and farms, which is exacerbating the impoverishment of the population. This situation has led to the setting up of a consultation framework aimed at creating a resilient food system.

Food systems policies and programmes

The town has set up a central kitchen to supply the school canteens with hot, healthy meals. An agroecological garden has also been created by CIGA to supply the central kitchen with nutritious produce. To perpetuate this direct supply chain, CIGA plans to create school and family gardens, a school farm focusing on market gardening, poultry farming with local breeds, beekeeping, aquaculture and dairy production, as well as agroecological gardens for schools and households.
